PENN ALUMNI -2011 CHAMPIONS OF THE 3 RIVERS SUMMER TOURNAMENT

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Head rugby coach Kruger Van Biljon is pleased to announce the final three additions for the rugby program as Knute O'Donnell, Brandon Bokhart and Austin Shoup come to Davenport from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind.

June 18-19, 2011
Pittsburgh, PA
Rugby Indiana Boys Select Side teams turned heads at the 2011 Potomac Regional All Star Tournament going undefeated and winning both the U19 and U17 division championship. Tournament MVP was awarded to Brad Shaw of Columbus High School (U17) and Gavin Brown of North Central High School (U19). Head Coach Eddie Able said, "Part of our success comes from the fact that Indiana has a lot of great players and that is a credit to all of the hard working coaches across the state. Seventeen Indiana High School teams were represented on our roster at this tournament which only goes to show the depth of quality teams and players we have here in Indiana." "We had a group of hard working kids and a great staff of coaches. Everyone got on the same page quickly and I think the team chemistry and continuity we were able to build showed on the field all weekend and was a big part of our success." This Tournament, held in Pittsburgh PA, included all-star teams in the region, including: New York State, New York Met, Potomac, North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. USA Rugby National team selectors were in attendance scouting for National High School All American team candidates, "Indiana is one of the best prepared teams we have seen so far...they look like they have been playing together for years", according to USA assistant coach Paule Barford. Several Indiana players were asked to join the candidate pool at a High Performance selection camp in Vancouver July 8-9, and four players are in the running to join the National High School team on a three week tour of South Africa in late July. Next on the schedule for the Indiana Select Side are International matches against Rugby Ontario (Canada), in Hamilton County on July 2nd & 3rd.

Midwest Championships 2011

"Back on Track" is the 2011 season motto choosen this season in February by Coach Bart. And it seems spot on after the efforts of the weekend and winning the 2011 Midwest Championship. Leading to the Midwest the team had played some solid rugby at times. They had also had a few letdowns just two weeks prior losing to LaSalette & Cathedral both in the last play of the games. Penn bounced back beating a good Brownsburg team and scrappy North Central team the week prior to the tournament. With the most league points, we earned the Indiana #1 seed and thus the Midwest School bracket #1 seed.

The team prepared well leading to the event- in game one they had little issue with Dexter of Michigan winning 52-5 and using 6 subs. Game two was as expected and a re-match of LaSalette. Penn respects LaSalette a great deal but needed to show that the game two weeks prior was a let down for us. This time the score was close but frankly the game never seemed in question 17-7. The championship game was a rematch of last years championship as well as a league rematch from 8 days prior. Penn scored in the first 5 minutes when sr Versharw Burke took the corner with his fully torn ACL and went 40 yards for the opening score. 10 minutes later jr Dylan Heyvaert powered 30 yards and over Brownsburg defenders to score the second try for Penn. Just when it seemed Penn may run away with it, Brownsburg came back to set the tempo for the middle 20 minutes of the game and added a converted try. O'Donnell hit a late penalty for Penn to add to his 2 conversions. Penn defended the Brownsburg attack very well at times and in the end it was 17-7 Penn..... Back on Track with another Midwest Title.
