Alumni Reunion - June 14, 2010
30+ Penn Alumni ruggers braved the heat Saturday June 12th and played a 60 minute reunion match. In the end, the yellow team won, but that really didnt matter. Coach Larry played in his first ever game (hip replacement and all), he even scored a try (but did not do his Zulu). Mr. Heyveart reminded us he is a Penn alum and wanted to give the game a go too- he played all 60 minutes, made a few mistakes, but had a really good game for a new guy. He knows now first hand how difficult the game and the fitness can be- credit to him and coach Larry for some great rugby first time out.
April 10, 2010: Michiana Men at Purdue
The game was a great contest, with lots of back & forth scoring, several lead changes and some hard tackles - Former teammates & staff, worked together on both sides of the ball and smashed into each other at the opposite side. Two former Penn leaders were the games captains as well (Toombs/Purdue) (Bontrager/Michiana). In the end, Michiana won by a converted try, but there was so much more than the score to be proud of this day. Once the game was complete, it was pointed out that 21 former Penn players (and one old coach) took the field that day. 7 more were there to see the game. So 28 recent Penn Ruggers & Coaches were able to gather in the spirit that rugby provides, to enjoy the day in competition and renewed friendships following. Yet another reason why the rugby we teach, in our program, is so successful and provides years of enjoyment in the game for the athlete.
